Since 2010, An Garda Síochána has contributed to making our roads safer through the use of safety cameras, using a service provider ‘GoSafe’ to operate them on its behalf. The primary purpose of safety cameras is to reduce speed related collisions, lessen injuries and save lives.

NCTS are urging all customers to continue to book and turn up for their NCT as normal. The test will be completed with the omission of the underbody inspection, which will be conducted at a later date when the lifts are returned fully to use. NCTS can confirm that a small number of lift inspections have recommenced on a restricted basis.

Since the issue of the scissors lift in NCTS Centres has come to light the Road Safety Authority has been working with Applus and engaging with other relevant stakeholders to ensure that they are appraised of the issue and to establish the extent of the problem and possible resolutions. This also includes engagement with An Garda Síochána.

Provisional road collision statistics for 2019 show deaths resulting from road traffic collisions have increased. A total of 148* people lost their lives in 2019, compared to 142 in 2018, a 4% rise. 2018 was the safest recorded year on Irish roads.

The Road Safety Authority (RSA), Gaelic Players Association (GPA) and Women's Gaelic Players Association (WGPA) today announced a three-year collaboration to promote road safety awareness. Initially focusing on reducing the incidences of two killer behaviours on Irish roads – using a mobile phone while driving and driver fatigue, together the three organisations hope to help drive behavioural change amongst a younger cohort of road users.

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) and An Garda Síochána have today Thursday 1 August 2019, published a provisional review of progress in road safety up to July 28, 2019*. The review shows that from 1 January to 28 July 2019, 89 people died on Irish roads in 80 collisions. This represents 3% more collisions and 7% more deaths compared to provisional Garda data for the same period in 2018.

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) has said, today 4 July 2019, that anyone living in Ireland who holds a UK (including Northern Ireland) driving licence must exchange it for an Irish driving licence, before the 31 October 2019, in the event that the UK leaves the EU without a deal. If there is a no-deal Brexit, then after this date, if you are living in Ireland, your UK driving licence will no longer be valid to drive here.

Mr. Shane Ross TD, Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Road Safety Authority (RSA), An Garda Síochána and Cyclist.ie, the Irish Cycling Advocacy Network, today called on drivers to slow down and keep a safe distance when overtaking cyclists on both urban and rural roads. Not only during the upcoming National Bike Week which runs from Saturday 22 to Sunday 30 June, but every day of the year. Cyclists are also being reminded to follow the rules of the road.

Ireland has today been named the winner of this year’s prestigious European Transport Safety Council Road Safety Performance Index (PIN) award. The annual award is presented to a European country that has demonstrated continued progress on road safety combined with a strategic approach to tackling the problem across government. The award will be presented to Shane Ross, Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport at an event in Brussels later today.

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) has today revealed that there has been a 68% reduction in fatalities on Irish roads since the introduction of Ireland’s first road safety strategy in 1998. The finding was made today at the RSA Annual International Road Safety Conference which will inform the development of the next Government road safety strategy, which will run from 2021 to 2030.
