From 21 June 2021, several changes to the National Car Test will come into effect. These changes will see Ireland be amongst the first EU Member States to commence the use of On-Board Diagnostics (OBD), testing under EU Roadworthiness Directive 2014/45.

Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan TD and Minister of State Hildegarde Naughton TD have welcomed the gradual re-opening of in-person driver theory test centres after the 7th of June. The Road Safety Authority (RSA) will re-open its full network of 40 test centres with capacity being permitted at 25,000 driver theory tests per month.

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) and An Garda Síochána have renewed their appeal for road users to take extra care when using the roads, as provisional collision figures for 2020 show that there has been a 17% increase in the number of fatal crashes and a 9% increase in road deaths compared to last year.

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) and An Garda Síochána are urging drivers to put their mobile phones away when driving as new research from the RSA shows that 1 in 10 motorists admit to regularly texting while driving. The Driver Attitudes & Behaviour Survey 2020(1) also revealed that 9% of motorists admit to driving and talking on a handheld mobile phone and 9% of motorists regularly check mobile apps while behind the wheel.
