The Road Safety Authority (RSA) and An Garda Síochána have launched a new road safety campaign urging road users to be extra cautious as the roads get busier, and to realise that they have changed due to increased numbers of cyclists and pedestrians on Irish roads. It follows the lifting of COVID-19 travel restrictions which now allow travel within a 20km limit of the home or within the county boundary.

The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross and the Road Safety Authority (RSA) have confirmed that the phased reopening of some RSA’s services will begin on Monday 8 June, the start of phase 2 of the Government’s road map for easing of Covid19 restrictions.

The National Car Testing Service (NCTS) has confirmed that the phased reopening of the NCT service will begin from the 8 June 2020 with the reopening of 15 centres. The reopening of the centres is being done in line with the Government’s Roadmap for reopening Society and Business, published on 1 May, and in compliance with the National Return to Work Safely Protocol.

The temporary derogation from certain rules concerning the driving and resting times for drivers of commercial vehicles will, as previously advised, expire on 31 May. From 1 June 2020, operators and drivers must comply with the normal rules applicable to driving and resting times for drivers of commercial vehicles.

An Garda Síochána will conduct a national speed enforcement operation "Slow Down”, supported by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) and other stakeholders, for a 24 hour period from 07.00hrs on Friday 22nd May to 07.00hrs on Saturday 23rd May 2020.

The Minister of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross and the Road Safety Authority (RSA) have confirmed that the Commercial Vehicle Roadworthiness Testing (CVRT) network will reopen from 18 May 2020 for vehicles with a test due date prior to 28 March 2020 (before the 3-month extension to commercial vehicle certificates of roadworthiness came into effect).

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) and the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport have agreed a further extension of the temporary derogation from certain provisions of the EU driving and resting time rules. This extension includes additional measures, which will apply from 17 April to 31 May 2020.

The Minister of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross and the RSA have confirmed that the National Driver Licence Service (NDLS), the National Car Testing Service (NCT), as well as the Commercial Vehicle Testing System are suspended until further notice with immediate effect.

In light of the need to facilitate social distancing and the expected additional burdens on medical services from Covid-19, the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross, has decided that the requirement for those over 70 (under certain circumstance) to provide a medical report shall be removed at this time.

Following the Government decision to introduce measures to delay the spread of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) the Road Safety Authority (RSA) sought and has received advice from the public health authorities who are managing this public health crisis. Based on that advice we are suspending all driving tests following the conclusion of the last test today Friday 13 March 2020.
