The Minister for Transport, Mr Eamonn Ryan TD, has signed an agreement with the United Kingdom that will allow for the exchange of UK driving licences for an Irish licence, for holders of UK licences resident here.

The Road Safety Authority (RSA), in consultation with the Department of Transport, has agreed to grant a temporary exception from certain provisions of the EU driving and resting time rules. It will apply to all drivers subject to the EU drivers’ hours and tachograph rules engaged in the carriage of goods, when operating on the territory of Ireland.

The call was made at the launch of a new road safety campaign, which is fronted by members of the emergency services.

This Sunday, 15 November marks ‘World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims’, a day when commemorations take place globally to remember the victims of road traffic crashes and their families. This year marks 25 years since the first Day of Remembrance was observed in 1995. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Road Safety Authority (RSA) will mark the day by hosting a special ceremony to be broadcast on its Facebook page at 2pm on Sunday, 15 November.

The Government has announced restrictions to further prevent the spread of COVID 19 in Dublin from midnight on Friday 18 September for 3 weeks until the 9 October and in Donegal from midnight on Friday 25 September for 3 weeks until the 16 October. RSA services and services that are operated on behalf of the RSA will remain open namely, Driver testing, Driver Theory Test, National Driver Licence Service, National Car Test Service (NCTS) and Commercial Vehicle Roadworthiness Testing (CVRT).
