Learner Drivers

Driving test eligibility

You must be eligible to sit a driving test.

There are certain requirements you must meet before you can sit a driving test (e.g., completed training, valid learner permit). These differ depending on the vehicle category you wish to drive.

To be eligible to sit your driving test you must have:

  • a valid learner permit and if it's a first-time car or motorbike learner permit you must have held it for at least six months.
  • completed Essential Driver Training (EDT) for cars (if you got your first learner permit on or after 4 April 2011) and all EDT sessions must be uploaded by your instructor to the MyEDT portal.
  • completed Initial Basic Training (IBT) for motorbikes (if you got your first learner permit on or after 6 December 2010). The IBT certificate must be in date and completed for the correct category of motorcycle for your test.

You can check the validity of your learner permit in your MyRoadSafety account and view the status of your driver training in the  MyEDT portal (cars only).

Your driving test appointment will be cancelled if you're not eligible

If you have a driving test scheduled but have not yet completed all of the required training, we will cancel your test five days before your appointment date. You won’t lose your fee and you will be kept on our waiting list. We will email you another booking invitation after you’ve met this requirement.
