How to renew or replace your learner permit, update personal details and add a new category.
Learner permits can only be renewed twice. After that, you must apply for a driving test or have unsuccessfully taken a driving test in the previous two years. You can renew your learner permit within three months of it expiring and up to five years after.
How to renew your learner permit
Important! You can't renew your learner permit a third time unless you have applied for a driving test or have unsuccessfully sat the driving test in the previous two years.
To apply online, you will need the following:
- A Public Services Card and verified MyGovID.
- Proof of your address dated within the last six months if your current address differs from the one you provided when you applied for your PSC.
- Proof that you are normally resident in Ireland if your place of birth and nationality are outside the EU/EEA
- Fully completed medical report form dated within one month, if required in your case.
- If applying for a third or subsequent learner permit, you must have taken and failed a driving test in the previous two years or have made an application for a driving test.
- Your application fee of €35.00. You can pay by credit or debit card, Google Pay or Apple Pay. If you are 70 years and over you are exempt from paying the fee.
You must book an appointment to attend an NDLS centre. You will need to bring the required supporting documents, ID and fee. An application form is no longer required. Your photograph and signature will be captured electronically at the NDLS centre.

How to replace a lost, stolen or damaged learner permit
You can now quickly apply for your replacement learner permit online. No need to complete paper forms, make appointments or visit an NDLS centre in person.
To replace a lost, stolen or damaged learner permit online, all you need is the following:
- A Public Services Card and verified MyGovID.
- A completed Garda Declaration form
- Proof of your address dated within the last six months if your current address differs from the one you provided when you applied for your PSC.
- Fully completed medical report form dated within one month, if required in your case.
- Your application fee of €35.00. You can pay by credit or debit card.

How to update personal details on a learner permit
If your name has changed since your last application you must first have updated your name with the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection (DEASP).
Then, all you need is the following:
- A Public Services Card and verified MyGovID in your updated name.
- Proof of your address dated within the last six months if your current address differs from the one you provided when you applied for your PSC.
- Proof that you are normally resident in Ireland if your place of birth and nationality are outside the EU/EEA.
- Fully completed medical report form dated within one month, if required in your case.
There is no fee for making an application to amend personal details unless your learner permit is also due for renewal or has been lost, stolen or damaged, in which case the application fee is €35.00. You can pay by credit or debit card.
If you are aged 70 years and over you are exempt from paying the fee.
Apply online to update personal details on a learner permit with MyGovID
You must book an appointment to attend an NDLS centre. You will need to bring the required supporting documents and ID. An application form is no longer required. Your photograph and signature will be captured electronically at the NDLS centre.
To apply in person at an NDLS centre you will need the following:
- Your current or most recent learner permit. If your permit has been lost, stolen or damaged, you must also bring valid photo ID with you.
- Proof of your personal public services number (PPSN).
- Evidence of your name change - you can present an acceptable photographic I.D issued in your new name. If you do not have this you will need to present certification of name change as follows:
(a) original civil marriage certificate* or civil partnership certificate;
(b) original evidence of divorce/separation or dissolution of civil partnership or evidence of initiation of same: a judicial separation court order or a separation agreement or a divorce decree or a letter from a solicitor confirming that a separation has been sought. In addition, you should submit your original UK/Irish birth certificate or your original civil marriage certificate* or original civil partnership certificate to confirm your birth surname;
(c) evidence that you are using the Irish version of your name i.e. two official documents that show you've been using your new name for two years on the date of application at the NDLS centre.
(d) evidence of your name change i.e. original Irish deed poll document which has been enrolled in the Irish High Court.

*Certified translations are required for all marriage certificates or civil partnership certificates which are not in English or Irish. Translations must be provided by a reputable company who must be a member of the Irish Translator and Interpreters Association. The original marriage or civil partnership certificate must be submitted together with the certified translation.

How to add a category to a learner permit
All you need is the following:
- A Public Services Card and verified MyGovID.
- Proof of your address dated within the last six months if your current address differs from the one you provided when you applied for your PSC.
- To have successfully passed the driver theory test in the category you are applying for in the previous 2 years.
- Proof that you are normally resident in Ireland if your place of birth and nationality are outside the EU/EEA.
- Fully completed medical report form dated within one month, if required in your case.
- Completed relevant driver certificate of professional competence (CPC), if required.
- Your application fee of €35.00. You can pay by credit or debit card.
You must book an appointment to attend an NDLS centre. You will need to bring the required supporting documents, ID and fee. An application form is no longer required. Your photograph and signature will be captured electronically at the NDLS centre.
To apply in person at an NDLS centre you will need the following:

- Proof that you are normally resident in Ireland if your place of birth and nationality are outside the EU/EEA.
