The Road Safety Authority (RSA) and An Garda Síochána are issuing an urgent road safety appeal to all road users to slow down, wear seatbelts, not to drive when impaired, or distracted – particularly by illegally using your phone while driving –, or when tired. Also, watch out for vulnerable road users over this Easter Bank Holiday weekend. It should be borne in mind by us all, that this appeal follows an extremely worrying increase in road deaths so far in 2022.

One in four motorists (26%) admitted there were times when they may have been over the limit when driving the morning after a night out according to new attitudinal research* released by the Road Safety Authority (RSA). Met Eireann are forecasting both sunny clear days as well as icy roads over the weekend. As a result the Road Safety Authority (RSA) is warning drivers of the danger posed by ‘sun glare’. Over half of child car seats (56%) checked by the Road Safety Authority’s Check it Fits service were incorrectly fitted and needed some type of adjustment to make them a safe fit. If a child’s car seat isn’t fitted correctly, it could lead to a serious or fatal injury in the event of a collision.

Research by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) has revealed that between 2017 and 2020, for every one road death recorded there were nine serious injuries on Irish roads. The research was presented at the RSA’s Annual Academic Lecture online today, which centred on the topic of serious injuries.

An Garda Síochána’s Christmas and New Year Road Safety Campaign for 2021 commenced on Friday 26th November and concluded on Tuesday 4th January 2022. The campaign primarily focussed on Mandatory Intoxicant Testing i.e. detecting those who drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The campaign also focused on speeding, non-wearing of seatbelts, mobile phone use by drivers, in addition to checking on unaccompanied drivers driving on learner permits.

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) and the Department of Transport have agreed to allow a temporary and urgent derogation in respect of certain provisions of the EU driving and resting time rules. The proposed derogation will apply to all operators and drivers subject to the EU driver’s hours and tachograph rules engaged in the carriage of goods.
