The RSA’s advice is that such alterations do not impact the roadworthiness and safety of the vehicle. The RSA does not have a role in the authorisation of post registration vehicle modifications and do not endorse or offer a list of companies that may provide an up-rating/down-rating service.
A vehicle’s DGVW (Design Gross Vehicle Weight) should not be changed without the original manufacturer’s approval. Please see our FAQs on vehicle conversions/modifications and up-rating/down-rating a vehicle.
In order to reclassify a vehicle or amend its vehicle registration certificate, you will need to contact Revenue to see if there are any VRT implications. If there are no VRT implications, you will need to contact your local motor tax office.
