A list of the offences that attract penalty points

Types of offences

There are currently 42 offences that are subject to penalty points. Here’s a sample of some of them and the penalty points they incur:

  • No insurance: 5 penalty points and a fine of up to €2,500 and/or a possible term of imprisonment
  • Careless driving: 5 penalty points and a fine of up to €1,500 and/or a possible term of imprisonment
  • Speeding: 4 penalty points on conviction in court and a fine of up to €800
  • No seatbelt: 4 penalty points on conviction in court and a fine of up to €800
    Driving while using a mobile phone: 2 penalty points and fixed-charge of €60; 4 penalty points and possible €2,000 fine on conviction in court for non-payment of fixed charge

Since 1 May 2009, penalty points have been in place for a number of NCT-related offences.
The offences are the following:

  • Using a vehicle (car) without a test certificate
  • Driving a vehicle before remedying a dangerous defect
  • Driving a dangerously defective vehicle
  • Using a vehicle without a certificate of roadworthiness

Note: it is also a legal requirement to display a valid NCT disc.
