Apply for a tachograph driver card

Find out how to apply for a driver card, renew an expired card, replace a lost or stolen card, or exchange an EU driver card for an Irish one.

*Please note this is NOT an application for a Plastic Card Driver Licence - this is an application for a tachograph card.

Please Note!

Only valid driver cards issued by other EU member states can be exchanged online.

Exchange of non Irish EU driver cards

Tachograph cards issued in other EU member states are still valid in Ireland, but you may replace yours with an Irish tachograph card if desired.

To be eligible to apply, you must

  • Have a valid EU issued driver tachograph card
  • Have a valid driving licence


A tachograph card for an exchange costs

  • €45 if you apply online, or
  • €60 if you apply by post - credit or debit card details only. Cash, postal orders, cheques or bank drafts are not accepted methods of payment.

OPTION 1: Apply online

  • garda iconTake a printout of your application form to a GARDA STATION to have your signature and photo witnessed.
  • post iconFinally, SEND your application form, supporting documents (listed on the printout) and photo to the RSA.
  • card iconThe RSA will notify you when your new card is ready.

OPTION 2: Apply by Post

  • printer iconFirst, download and print an application form (PDF) and fill out by hand. You can pay by cheque or postal order.
  • garda iconTake your completed application form to a GARDA STATION to have your signature and photo witnessed.
  • post iconFinally, SEND your application form, supporting documents, photo and payment to the RSA. Credit/debit card details are the only accepted methods of payment.
  • card iconThe RSA will notify you by letter when your new card is ready. You should follow the instructions contained in this letter in order to obtain your new card. 

OPTION 3: Apply in person

You can apply for a driver card at our public office, where your documents will be checked on the spot. You must bring your:

  • Completed application form (PDF)
  • Original driver licence
  • Passport photograph
  • EU licence holders must also bring proof of residence (a photocopy of a bank statement, utility bill or PPSN letter issued from Dept of Social Protection, no more than 3 months old, are the only residency proofs acceptable)
