Applying for your driving test online

Information about how to book your driving test online and current Covid-19 restrictions.

As a result of Covid-19 measures, our capacity to undertake driving tests, at pre-Covid 19 levels, has reduced.

Given the demand for driving tests and in the interests of fairness, for the foreseeable future we are prioritising customers in order of application date as well as applications from essential workers. Please note there is no need to contact us to schedule a test as we are unable to schedule test over the phone or by email request. Instead we will contact you once we reach your date of application in scheduling tests.

Also, we are experiencing delays in responding to customer queries due to the exceptional high number of calls and emails to our customer service teams. But we do offer a number of customer self-service options:

Driving test application requirements

You can make a booking for a driving test either online or by post.  Please note you cannot book your driving test by phone.

Before making a booking for your driving test online:

  • Know your current, valid driver number. (This is the number quoted opposite 4(d) on your learner permit
  • Know your PPS number—this can be found on tax documents or your pay slip and it is often on correspondence from a social welfare or tax office.
  • You must have a valid debit or credit card (Visa and Mastercard are currently accepted).
  • If you are booking by post payments can be made by cheque, postal money order or bank draft.
  • We are aware of an issue with our payment provider Global Payments where some customers may be charged more than once for their driving test fee.  We are working to resolve this issue and we are in the process of refunding the additional payments made back to the credit/debit card from which you made the payment.  Please note it can take up to 7 days for these refunds to be processed.  We apologise for any inconvenience caused to those customers who are affected.

New EU safety rules for processing payments

To reduce online fraud, the EU has introduced new safety rules for processing online payments known as the Payments Services Directive 2 (PSD). This requires us to capture cardholder data during electronic transactions and send it to the cardholder’s bank for ID authentication.

Therefore, when you are making a payment for an RSA service, such as booking a driving test, we are legally obliged to capture the necessary cardholder data from your transaction and pass this on to your bank so they can check that you are the official cardholder. In some cases, further authentication may be required, for example, your bank may ask you to submit a code they send to your mobile. This is called Strong Customer Authentication (SCA). If you experience any issues during this stage, please contact your bank directly.
